FH Motorbody carried out front end repairs, bumper paintwork, bonnet refinishing and panel alignment on this yellow MINI after front end damage.

Restoring a Yellow MINI After Front End Damage

At FH Motorbody, we recently carried out front end repair and paintwork on this yellow MINI after damage to the front bumper, bonnet and surrounding front corner area.

The MINI is a car with a lot of character, but that also means every panel gap, curve and trim piece needs to sit just right. A poor repair on one of these stands out immediately. The rounded headlights, curved bonnet line and large front bumper all need careful alignment, otherwise the whole front end can look slightly “off”, which is exactly the kind of thing that annoys both us and anyone with functioning eyes.

This job involved stripping down the damaged front end, assessing the mounting points, preparing and painting the replacement or repaired panels, then rebuilding the front of the car so everything lined up properly again.

Initial Assessment

When the vehicle arrived, the damage was focused around the front end. The front bumper had been affected, along with the bonnet area and the front corner around the headlight and wing section.

Before any paintwork was carried out, the first stage was to strip the front end down. This allowed us to properly inspect what was damaged underneath, rather than just looking at the outside and pretending plastic clips are magic. On modern vehicles, especially MINIs, a lot of the visible damage can hide broken brackets, damaged fixings or distorted mounting points behind the bumper.

The front bumper, grille sections, trims and associated fittings were removed so we could check the structure behind them. The headlight area and front panel mounting points were also inspected to make sure the repaired panels would sit correctly once refitted.

Front Bumper Preparation

The front bumper needed careful preparation before paint. The bumper was stripped, cleaned and assessed for damage, then prepared for refinishing.

Any damaged or uneven areas were worked back, repaired and smoothed before primer was applied. Primer is an important stage because it gives the final paint something stable to bond to and helps reveal any remaining imperfections in the surface. If a panel is not properly prepared before paint, the final finish will show every tiny defect. Paint is many things, but sadly it is not a miracle blanket for bad prep work.

Once the bumper was primed, it was checked again before colour was applied.

Bonnet and Panel Paintwork

The bonnet was also prepared and refinished as part of the repair. This included surface preparation, priming where required, and painting to match the MINI’s bright yellow/orange factory colour.

Matching this sort of colour takes care. Strong colours like yellow can be particularly unforgiving because slight differences in shade can show clearly in daylight. The aim is not just to make the new paint look good on its own, but to make it blend naturally with the existing paintwork on the rest of the car.

The panels were painted, lacquered and finished to give the correct gloss and depth, making sure the repaired areas matched the rest of the vehicle as closely as possible.

Checking the Front Structure and Mounting Points

With the bumper removed, we were able to inspect the underlying front end components. This included checking the bumper support areas, headlight mounting points, brackets, clips and surrounding trim locations.

This part of the job is just as important as the painting. A freshly painted bumper is no use if it does not sit correctly on the car. The mounting points need to be secure, the gaps need to be even, and the trims need to clip back into place properly.

The front corner was checked carefully before refitting began. Any damaged fixings or clips were dealt with so the repaired front end could go back together properly.

Refit and Alignment

Once the painted panels were ready, the MINI was carefully rebuilt. The bumper, grille sections, headlight area, bonnet and trims were refitted and aligned.

Panel alignment is a key part of a good body repair. On this MINI, the front bumper needs to meet the wings neatly, the bonnet line needs to sit evenly, and the headlight surround needs to look natural against the surrounding panels.

During the refit, we checked the fitment across the front end to make sure everything sat as it should. This included the bumper edges, bonnet shut lines, headlight position, lower trims and front grille area.

Final Finish

After the repair and refit were complete, the front end of the MINI was brought back to a clean, tidy and properly finished condition.

The yellow paintwork was restored, the front bumper and bonnet were refinished, and the car’s front end was rebuilt with the correct panel fitment. The result was a MINI that looked bright, sharp and back to how it should be.

This is the sort of work where the details matter. From the first strip-down to the final polish, every stage affects the finished result. Good bodywork is not just about spraying paint onto a panel and hoping the universe handles the rest. It is preparation, alignment, colour matching and patience.
